There’s a certain type of magic that winter brings. Watching snow fall, the sunset glowing in the early evening, winter activities, getting cozy with family and friends. I have a lot of friends that really hate winter time. I was lucky because early in life, I started skiing (then later snowboarding), sledding, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and ice skating. I was born in December and firmly believed I was made for winter. My family has never been too shy to go out on a winter day so we can end the evening with hot cocoa. I was lucky to find physical activities early in life to help me enjoy a season that has a lot of less than stellar features. Today I want to talk about a couple ways you can find a little more joy this winter:
-Find an activity you enjoy! I’ve seen the quote “there’s no bad weather, just bad clothing”. Bundle up, grab some friends and head out to face the weather! Whether you’re renting snowshoes or going for a walk or find a place to skate - finding an activity that you enjoy will definitely help. If you’re interested in renting snowshoes or cross country skis, there are a few places around Des Moines that offer them. If you’re not in the Des Moines area, feel free to reach out and I can help you find a rental shop.
-Embrace the cozy! This is a good excuse to make some cocoa and snuggle up under a big blanket. Mix it up and invite friends over for a movie night. Everyone can bring snacks and enjoy warm drinks.
-Introduce a new routine! Getting out and about and even being super social can be tough for a lot of people this time of year. Introducing a new routine to your day to day is a pretty simple way to give yourself a small boost. Get up 15 minutes earlier in the morning to journal. Set aside a half hour each night to get off the couch and do some yoga (Youtube has every video you could need). Take a little dance break mid day to shake off the blues.
-Visit the library! When was the last time you visited the library? Browse the books (or movies) for as long as you want. Grab a book off the shelf and a chair in the back and spend some time somewhere else for a while.
-Make some plans! Start making some plans for activities or travels in the warmer months to come. It will give you something to do and something to look forward to.
-Treat yourself! Winter can be pretty tough on our skin and nails. Dry skin, chipping nails, it’s not great. Set up a spa day for yourself. If you’re on a budget, buy a couple facemasks, pull out your nail polish and have yourself a girls day.
-Learn a new hobby! Is there something you’ve been wanting to try, but haven’t quite found the time or patience to sit down and do it? Winter is the perfect time! Learn to crochet, a new instrument or a new language. There are endless Youtube videos and apps that are free to get you started.
Winter can be tough with dark days and bitter cold - but it’s not too hard to find the beauty and fun in the season. Look a little closer and get yourself out there! We’ll all get through it together.
Live big.
