Take Me To... Duluth, MN

There are a lot of gems throughout the Midwest. One of my most favorite places to visit is Duluth, MN. I don't know if it's because I feel completely relaxed, or because we spend almost the whole time outside or if I'm secretly a mermaid and just being by the water feels like home. I have no idea the reason, but Duluth has stolen my heart many years ago.

We typically stay in the Canal Park area when visiting. This gives us basically direct access to the board walk and just a short walk to the beach and lighthouses. Typically there are large ships that come in to the bay area to either get or drop off their cargo. Watching those ships is fun for any age. The bridge in canal park rises so the giant beasts can enter the bay and everyone lines up near the light houses to watch in awe.

Of course we don't spend the whole time in Canal Park. Often times we'll head up to North Shore to visit the waterfalls. When the falls are low, you'll see families running across the rocks in the middle of the river. We've even walked under them - just to say we did. But when the water is high, you'll see how much power this water really has. You can feel the mist coming off the rocks and can hike the trails for miles. No matter what, the water is incredible - as are the views. On the way back, it's always important to stop at Betty's Pies. This small restaurant is full of delicious food and of course, a long list of pies.

If you're looking for even more adventures, you're in the right place. There are hiking trails that start in this area that'll lead you up to Canada. There are also places to rent paddle boards in the summer. I'm a big fan of North Shore SUP. For the winter warriors, Lutsen Mtn is up in this area. Lutsen is the only set of mountains in the Midwest and despite the bitter cold that happens here, the views make it all worth it. Spirit Mountain is in Duluth and has activities all year long, including skiing, an alpine slide, camping and live music. For all of you runners or rollerbladers, Duluth is home to Grandmas Marathon (and yes, there is a marathon for the bladers as well).

Duluth is an amazing place that truly has something to offer everyone. If you're looking for a place to spend some time, consider making the trip.

Have you been to Duluth? Let me know your favorite activities.

Live big.
